Farm water monitoring: Your pump doesn’t need you standing beside it anymore

Farm water monitoring is making it easier to keep an eye on what’s happening across your property without always having to physically head out and check the pump.

Managing water across a farm has traditionally involved plenty of driving around, checking tanks, checking pumps and making sure everything is working as it should.

Modern farm water technology is changing that.

Depending on your pump and water system, monitoring and control options can give you greater visibility over what’s happening from your phone, making it easier to manage water across the property.

What can farm water monitoring do?

The technology available will depend on your pump and how your water system is set up, but modern monitoring and control systems can provide useful information about how your system is operating.

For farmers managing remote tanks, troughs, dams or water points, that can mean fewer unnecessary trips across the property just to see whether everything is doing what it should.

Some systems can also provide remote control functionality, allowing certain functions to be managed without being physically at the pump.

If improving your farm water system has been sitting on the list, the Victorian Government’s Farm Drought Support Grants may be able to help eligible farmers bring those plans forward.

Eligible primary production businesses across Victoria can currently access a dollar-for-dollar co-contribution grant of up to $5,000 (ex GST). Eligible primary producers in designated south-west Victorian LGAs can access up to $10,000 (ex GST).

Eligible activities can include water infrastructure improvements such as pipes, tanks, troughs, reticulated water systems and irrigation system upgrades.
