What is carbon monoxide and why should you care?

June 18, 2026

As the weather cools down across South West Victoria, many of us start firing up heaters that may not have been used for months.

It’s also the time of year we start talking to customers about carbon monoxide.

Before you switch off, this isn’t about scare tactics.

Most heating systems operate safely when they’re installed correctly and serviced regularly. This article is simply about understanding what carbon monoxide is, why it matters and how a few simple checks can help keep your home safe this winter.

What is carbon monoxide?

Carbon monoxide is a gas that can be produced when fuels such as wood, gas, petrol, diesel or coal don’t burn completely.

The challenge is that carbon monoxide can’t be seen, smelled or tasted.

That’s why regular servicing is so important.

Which heating systems can produce carbon monoxide?

Any appliance that burns fuel can produce carbon monoxide if it isn’t operating properly.

This can include:

  • Gas heaters
  • Wood heaters
  • Gas hot water systems
  • Open fireplaces
  • Some outdoor appliances used indoors

That doesn’t mean these appliances are unsafe. It simply means they need regular maintenance, just like any other appliance in your home.

Why does servicing matter?

One of the most common things we hear is, “The heater seems to be working fine.”

And often it is.

But most people wouldn’t drive their car for years without a service, yet many heaters go winter after winter without being checked.

A professional service helps make sure your heating system is:

  • Operating efficiently
  • Running as intended
  • Free from excessive wear and tear
  • Ready for winter

It also allows potential issues to be identified before they turn into costly repairs.

What are carbon monoxide checks?

A carbon monoxide check is often included as part of a heating service.

Think of it as a safety check for your heater.

It’s a straightforward process that helps confirm your appliance is operating safely and performing as it should.

When should you book a check?

If your heater hasn’t been serviced in several years, it’s worth booking an inspection.

You should also consider a service if:

  • Your heater is getting older
  • You notice unusual smells
  • It isn’t heating as well as it used to
  • You’ve recently moved into a home and don’t know the service history

Even if everything appears to be working normally, regular servicing can help keep your system running safely and efficiently.
