Repair or replace? How to know what’s right for your heater

August 20, 2026

If your heater has made it this far through winter, it can be tempting to ignore the odd noise, reset or room that just doesn’t seem to warm up properly.

But you don’t have to wait until it stops working altogether.

Often, a heater will give you signs that something isn’t quite right. The question is whether it’s worth repairing, or whether your money would be better spent on an upgrade.

When a repair might be all you need

Not every heating problem means you need a new system.

If your heater is generally reliable, isn’t particularly old and has only recently started playing up, a service or repair could be enough to get it back on track.

Things like poor airflow, unusual noises or reduced performance are worth getting checked before assuming the worst.

When should you consider replacing it?

There comes a point where continuing to repair an older heater may not make sense.

It could be worth discussing an upgrade if:

  • Your heater regularly needs repairs
  • It’s getting older and becoming less reliable
  • Your energy bills have increased
  • It struggles to keep your home comfortable
  • Your household or home has changed since it was installed
  • You’re spending more on repairs without seeing much improvement

Sometimes putting more money into an ageing system simply delays the inevitable.

Could your old heater qualify for a discount?

This is something worth asking before you replace your heater.

The Victorian Energy Upgrades program currently provides discounts for eligible households upgrading to approved energy-efficient reverse cycle air conditioners.

The discount available depends on what you’re replacing and the new system being installed. In some cases, replacing an old gas heating system can attract a larger discount.

There are conditions involved, so don’t assume every heater or replacement system will qualify.

If you’re considering an upgrade, talk to us before the work begins so we can explain the options available for your home.

Start with getting it checked

You don’t need to work out whether to repair or replace your heater yourself.

If your heating has been struggling this winter, the Finchetts team can take a look at your current system and talk you through the options.

If a service or repair makes sense, we’ll tell you.

If it’s time to consider an upgrade, we can help you find a system that suits your home, lifestyle and budget, and discuss whether an eligible Victorian Energy Upgrades discount may apply.

The important thing is not waiting until you’re left without heating to do something about it.
