5 signs your heater needs attention

August 11, 2026

Your heater has probably been putting in some serious hours this winter.

And while it doesn’t need to stop working completely for there to be a problem, it will often give you a few clues that something isn’t quite right.

If you’ve noticed any of these signs around your home, it could be time to have your heating checked.

1. It’s making strange noises

You know what your heater normally sounds like.

If it suddenly starts rattling, banging, squeaking or making a noise you haven’t heard before, don’t just turn the TV up and hope it goes away.

It could be something simple, but unusual noises are worth having checked before a small issue becomes a bigger one.

2. Some rooms are warm and others aren’t

One room feels like summer while another still needs three layers?

Uneven heating can be a sign your system isn’t distributing warmth around your home as well as it should.

Depending on your heating system, it could be an airflow or maintenance issue. It may also be that your existing heater is no longer the right fit for your home.

3. Your energy bills are creeping up

If you’re paying more to heat your home but you haven’t changed how you use your heater, it could be working harder than it needs to.

Age, wear and tear or a lack of maintenance can all affect how efficiently a heating system operates.

A service can help identify whether something is affecting its performance.

4. The airflow isn’t what it used to be

If you have a ducted or split system and the airflow feels weaker than usual, pay attention.

Dirty filters, blocked airflow or other issues can make it harder for your system to move warm air around your home.

Sometimes the fix is straightforward, but it’s better to find out than make your heater work harder all winter.

5. You’re constantly resetting it

Having to turn your system off and back on again to get it working isn’t something you should have to live with.

If resets are becoming part of your heating routine, there’s likely a reason behind it.

Getting it checked can help determine whether your system needs a repair, service or further investigation.

Don’t wait for it to stop completely

Your heater doesn’t have to completely break down before you call someone.

If something sounds, feels or performs differently, getting it checked early can help identify smaller issues and keep your heating performing as it should.

Sometimes it just needs a service. Sometimes a repair is needed. And if your system is getting older and struggling to keep your home comfortable, it might be worth discussing an upgrade.
